Alvin W. "Bill" McCleaf Memorial Video

Alvin W. "Bill" McCleaf, 92, of Hanover, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at the Hanover Hall. He was the loving husband of Charlotte A. (Yingling) McCleaf; together they shared 62 years of marriage.

Born February 24, 1929 in Hanover, he was a son of the late Russell C., Sr. and Cara (Hauver) McCleaf.

Mr. McCleaf graduated from Eichelberger Senior High School in Hanover with the Class of 1946.  He served with the U.S. Army's 45 th Infantry Division as a Sergeant in Korea.  After his military service, he attended Penn State University.

Mr. McCleaf is a licensed Notary Public, a member of Hanover Elks Lodge 763, BPO Elks, and St. Matthew Lutheran Church where he was president of the church council working on renovations, a member on the usher team, and assisted to help a refugee family.

Mr. McCleaf retired after 38 years with Buchart-Horn Inc. Mr. McCleaf joined Buchart-Horn as a bookkeeper on April 25, 1957.  On Dec. 23, 1990, he was transferred to PACE Resources where he worked as an accountant.

Bill was a loving husband, father and grandfather; he was a deeply dedicated father and sacrificed his free time to support family interests, kids' sports, Indian Guides, coaching his both his son's baseball teams. He was a well-mannered man who always had a smile on his face for friends and strangers alike; his personality was kind, patient, understanding and heroic, he once saved his son and another little boy from a strong undertow current. Bill loved attending his children's sports events and was an avid Penn State and Philadelphia Phillies fan. During his time at Eichelberger High School, Bill wrestled, played baseball, played football and ran track and field.

In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by a daughter, Sue McCleaf; two sons, Andrew W. McCleaf and his wife Sabrina of Hanaban, SC, John McCleaf of Hanover and two granddaughters, Dylan and Skylar McCleaf both of Hanaban, SC.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Katherine Hull and a brother Russell C. McCleaf, Jr.

A service to celebrate the life of Bill will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 30 W. Chestnut St., Hanover, PA with The Rev. M. David Kiel officiating. A time to share memories with the family will be on Wednesday from 12 p.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hanover. If you are attending the service and/or viewing please wear a mask and maintain social distancing.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church Organ Fund, 30 W. Chestnut St. Hanover PA 17331.
