Obituary

Arlene M. (Brumgard) Lippy, 96, of Hanover, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, August 24, 2024.

Born on December 12, 1927, in Hanover, Arlene was the beloved daughter of the late George W. and Erma (Merkle) Brumgard.

Arlene enjoyed traveling, she would go on the AARP bus trips, and enjoyed going to the mountains especially in Potter County, but also with favorite stops in Galeton and Germania. Always hopeful for a glimpse of a bear, she cherished these adventures as a way to reconnect with nature and the joy of exploration. Arlene often reminisced about her childhood on the family farm, recounting stories of the hard work that shaped her character. She would fondly recall her daily walks to the one-room schoolhouse, the same school her father had attended years before, a journey her children would joke was uphill both ways.

A dedicated worker throughout her life, Arlene began her career at Hanover Shoe. After her children were born, she took on various roles at Coulson Heel, Noel's Potato Chips, which later became Tasty Cake, and finally became Utz, where she retired after many years of service. In addition to her factory work, Arlene was a familiar face at Dutch Country Restaurant, formerly Marshall's Diner. When Gary and Ruby Bentzel purchased the diner, they lovingly remarked that Arlene "came with the place," a testament to her warm presence and unwavering dedication.

Family was at the heart of Arlene's life. She cherished every moment spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Known for her incredible baking skills, she took great pride in preparing an array of pies and other treats for her loved ones. Her kitchen was always filled with the comforting aroma of her culinary creations, a reflection of the love she poured into every dish, without a single recipe.

Arlene is survived by her daughter, Barbara Heldibridle and husband Richard of Abbottstown; son, Dennis Lippy of San Antonio, TX; daughter, Susan LeGore of Chambersburg; son, Wayne Lippy and wife Cindy of York; son, Alan Lippy and wife Betty of Metztown; her grandchildren: Brian Heldibridle, Scott Heldibridle, Jodi Knox, Matthew Lippy, Mary Lippy, Kimberly Gutshall, Eric LeGore, Lt. Col. Aaron Lippy, Emily Lippy, Jennifer Marzullo, and Brad Lippy; her sister, Linda Brumgard; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Allison Lippy, and her three sisters, Miriam Runkle, Mae Frock, and Janet Frock.

A celebration of Arlene's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 30, 2024, at Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover, PA, with Rev. Bill Mummert officiating. Friends and family are invited to gather and share memories during a visitation from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Hanover. Serving as pallbearers will be Brian Heldibridle, Eric LeGore, Aaron Lippy, Brad Lippy, Bennett Lippy, Nathan Knox, and Derik Gutshall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Foundations Department, 1 Billy Graham Parkway, Charlotte, NC 28201.
