Obituary

Donald E. Shaeffer, 85, of Hanover and also of Rockledge, FL, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 16, 2022 at Sunrise of Pikesville in Maryland. He was the loving husband of Pat Shaeffer; together they shared 64 years of marriage.

Born June 24, 1936 in Brodbecks, he was a son of the late George E. and Ruth E. (Hamme) Shaeffer.

Donald served in the US Air Force and was employed as a tool and die maker and engineer at Black & Decker for 30 years in Hampstead, MD and retired from Keystone Machine in Littlestown, PA. Mr. Shaeffer was known to his friends as "Dyno" or "Shifty" and he was a member of Southern PA Volkswagen Club, German Accent Volkswagen Club in FL., National Hot Rod Assoc., National Nostalgia Drag Racing Assoc. and Moose Lodge #227 of Hanover. He spent his spare time building Volkswagen engines for street and drag racing, building engines for dune buggies, playing gold, riding bikes, racing Volkswagens for fun with his son and wife at many local drag strips. His favorite colors were black and orange and he loved eating his wife's delicious cherry pie.

In addition to his wife, Donald is survived by a daughter, Lisa G. Sterner and her soon to be husband Wally Sims of Spring Grove; a son, Randy J. Shaeffer and his wife Cathy of Hanover; a grandson, T.J. Sterner of Glen Rock; a former daughter in law, Kelly Shaeffer of Hanover and many loving extended family members and friends.

There will be no public viewing. Following cremation, a burial will be held at Mt. Olivet Cemetery at a later date. Please visit www.wetzelfuneralhome.com on a weekly basis for updates on the burial date and time.
