Emory S. "Junie" Matthews, 94, of Hanover, passed away after a short illness on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at home.  He was the loving husband of Marion A. (Berwager) Matthews; together they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in June of 2021.

Born November 6, 1927 in Littlestown, he was the son of the late Emory S. and Ruby M. (Bull) Matthews.

Emory served in the U.S. Army from 1946-1947. He was awarded the World War II Victory medal. He retired from ESAB Welding Products in Hanover, after 27 years of service.

In addition to his wife, Emory is survived by five children: Sally Curren and her husband, Brian; Susan Hamilton; Tom Matthews and his wife, Carolyn; Jane Lawrence; and Jim Matthews. He also had four grandchildren, Benjamin Hamilton, Nathan Busbey and wife, Missy; Blake Lawrence; and Amy Lawrence, along with one great-granddaughter, McKenna Busbey. Emory is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Emory was predeceased by four siblings: Mildred Kindig, Annabelle Groft, Charles Matthews and Dorothy (Dot) Zortman.

A service to celebrate and remember the life of Emory will be held Friday, January 14, 2022 at Wetzel Funeral Home, 549 Carlisle Street, Hanover, with the Rev. Dr. Kathy Vitalis Hoffman of St. Matthew Lutheran Church officiating. A time to share memories and an opportunity to view will be on Friday from 10 a.m. until the start of the service at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery with military honors rendered by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Amy Lawrence, Nathan Busbey, Benjamin Hamilton, Thomas Matthews, Blake Lawrence and Brian Curren. Due to the current situation with COVID, please consider wearing a mask.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Emory's name can be made to VNA (Hospice) of Hanover/Spring Grove.
