Obituary

Evelyn R. (Simmons) Learn, 94, of Hanover, peacefully entered God's eternal care on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at her daughter's home in Aspers, surrounded by her loving family. She was the devoted wife of the late William H. Learn, with whom she shared 42 wonderful years of marriage before his passing in 1990. The couple married on October 20, 1948, beginning a lifelong journey of love and devotion.

Born on October 17, 1930, in Johnstown, Evelyn was the daughter of the late Oscar H. and Wilda E. (Smouse) Simmons.

Evelyn was a woman of deep faith and unwavering devotion to her family. A longtime member of Hanover First Church of God since 1968, she served faithfully as a Sunday School teacher for many years, touching countless lives with her kindness and wisdom. She also dedicated much of her career to Hanover Hospital, working as an operating room technician and providing compassionate care to those in need.

Above all, Evelyn's greatest joy was her family. She was a proud mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who cherished every moment spent with her loved ones. She was always willing to lend a helping hand, offer words of encouragement, or share a warm embrace. She enjoyed working on puzzles, admiring beautiful flowers, and finding joy in the simple blessings of life.

Evelyn is survived by her children, Mary Brown and her husband Bruce of West Chester, David Learn and his wife Mary Lou of Mechanicsburg, Gloria Slaybaugh of Aspers, Carol Good and her husband John of Dillsburg, Russell Learn and his wife Kim of Littlestown, and Ron Learn and his wife Jeanne of McSherrystown. She was also blessed with 16 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and many extended family members and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory. In addition to her parents and husband, Evelyn was preceded in death by her daughters, Doris Learn and Wanda Learn.

A service to celebrate Evelyn's beautiful life will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 31, 2025, at Hanover First Church of God, 600 Fairview Dr., Hanover, PA, with Pastor John Good officiating. Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation on Thursday, January 30, from 6:00-8:00 PM at Wetzel Funeral Home & Crematory, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover, and again on Friday at the church from 10:00-11:00 AM. Evelyn will be laid to rest at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hanover.
