Gloria (Buffington)
Smith
Jul 4, 1949 — Nov 5, 2022
Gloria (Buffington) Smith, 73, of Glenville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 5, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. She was the cherished wife of Paul J. Smith; together they shared 52 beautiful years of marriage.
Born on July 4, 1949 in Hanover, she was a daughter of the late William F. Buffington, Sr., and Eugenia (Glant) Buffington.
Gloria loved to garden and had a "green thumb". She was a devoted and loving nana to her 11 grandkids, always ready to help with them. She enjoyed beach vacations, always being on the go, cooking, and spending time with her family.
Gloria took pride in a job well done and worked hard throughout her career, taking some time off to have children. Starting in the late '60s, she was a telephone operator for United Telephone Co and then moved into office secretary work, first at Hanover Industries and then into the automotive industry, first at Valley Motors Ford, then Gene Latta Ford, and finished her career at Stambaugh Auto Sales.
Once retiring and before her health started to decline, she was a regular volunteer at the Hanover Area Council of Churches. She donated to many charities, including St Jude Children's Research Hospital, American Diabetes Association, Alzheimer's Association, Disabled American Veterans, and numerous others.
In addition to her husband, Gloria is survived by her four children, Nicole R. Kitzman of York, Christopher P. Smith of York, Adam P. Smith of York, Ben J. Smith and his wife Krista of Glenville; 11 grandchildren, Griffin, Riley, Colton, Zephyr, Willow, Cienna, Lincoln, Emma, Owen, Makai, Harper; four siblings, Bonnie Fritz and her husband Steven of Hanover, John Buffington and his companion Rayann of Hanover, Kelly Stultz and her husband Leroy of Hanover, Scott Buffington and his wife Julie of Middletown; her dear friend of 30 years and honorary family member Joan Belt of Hanover and many other loving extended family members and friends.
In addition to her parents, Gloria was preceded in death by a brother, William F. Buffington, Jr.
There will be no public viewing. Following cremation, there will be a memorial service to celebrate the life of Gloria at 2 p.m. on April 15, 2023 at the Lake Club, 2028 Lake Club Ln. Spring Grove, PA. The family will receive friends to share memories of Gloria from 1 p.m. until the time of service at the Lake Club.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Hanover Area Council of Churches, 136 Carlisle St, Hanover, PA 17331.
