Sep 27, 1925 — Jul 14, 2025
Grace Bell (Plaine) Smith, 99, of Gettysburg, passed away peacefully on Monday July 14, 2025 at Genesis Health Care in Gettysburg.
She was the devoted wife of the late Thomas M. Smith. Together, they shared cherished years of marriage before his passing in 1984.
Born on September 17, 1925, in Libertytown, MD she was the daughter of the late John Cleveland and Anna Mary (Schiller) Plaine.
Grace was raised in Walkersville, MD area and met her future husband after his first return from serving in World War II. The two married, settled down and began raising a family, something Grace considered a great joy. A loving mother and devoted homemaker, she took pride in caring for her home and family. While raising her children, Grace also worked diligently outside the home as a seamstress and as a laborer at the Cambridge Rubber Factory for many years. Known for her strong work ethic and neatly kept home, she embodied traditional values and rarely left the house without "putting her face on."
After Thomas's passing, Grace continued to find joy in traveling and going on bus trips with family and friends, creating lasting memories.
She is survived by her grandchildren: Tim Smith and his wife Kathleen of Jessup, MD; Tina Williams and her husband Matt of Orrtanna; Jessica Murphy and her husband Scott of Glenville; Rebecca Layton and Lucynda Shaffer, both of Littlestown. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many loving extended family members and friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, Grace was preceded in death by her children: Darryl T. Smith, Wanda Jeffers and John Smith, as well as seven siblings.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be no public services or viewing. Following cremation, she will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband at Pipe Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery in union Bridge, MD.
The Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory in Hanover is assisting the family with the arrangements.
