Obituary

It is with heavy heart that I am announcing the passing of Hazel S Phillips, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother (better known as Granny) who passed on November 29th at 6:25pm surrounded by her husband and family, at the age of 82. Hazel was born April 15, 1941 in Kingsdale, PA, the daughter of Charles and Cora (Starner) Shelton. She was the youngest of 11 children. Hazel is survived by her husband Robert J Phillips; two daughters, Brenda (Pete) Smith of Hanover, Tina Phillips and daughter Breanne Stewart of Smyrna, TN and four sons, Robert J Phillips Jr. of Littlestown, Tony (Christine) Phillips of Glenville, PA, Rick (Robin) Phillips and Terry (Beth)Phillips of Hanover; 11 grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren. One brother and a sister, Janet Swartz of Littlestown, also many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her daughter in law, Cathy Phillips and her step grandson Zachary Link. Hazel grew up in Harney, MD where she enjoyed roller skating and weekends spent at Forest Park where she met my Dad and her husband of 66 years. She was an excellent cook. She canned and jarred her home grown fruits and vegetables. She made some of the best jellies and was champion at frying chicken. No one could compete with her Beef Pot Pie. Some loved her and some hated her but one thing is for sure she kept it real. Right or wrong. Some labeled her aggressive but I saw her as assertive, bossy but she kept leading, difficult but she kept telling her truth. As hard as she would fight us, she would fight twice as hard to defend us. She was quick witted and made me laugh at her zingers. I never doubted her love for us kids and I know without a doubt she loved my Dad with her very soul. She was big into camping and Bluegrass Music. She retired from Sunoco Products. This is not goodbye but see you later. We love you Mom. There will be no viewing or service at this time. Please, make a contribution in her name to your local Alzheimer's Association.
