Helen L.
Renner
May 27, 1934 — Feb 3, 2022
Helen Louvise (Wintrode) Renner, Ph.D., 87, of Hanover, entered eternity in Heaven on Thursday, February 3, 2022, at Homewood at Plum Creek. She was the loving wife and widow of Gene R. Renner, who passed away in October of 1999. Together they shared 45 years of marriage.
Born May 27, 1934, in Silver Run, MD, she was the daughter of the late Roy Elmer John and Martha May (Koontz) Wintrode.
Dr. Renner grew up on small farms in Silver Run, MD, and Littlestown, PA. She was a 1952 graduate of Littlestown High School, where she played piano and tenor saxophone. The first of her family to attend college, she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education (1961), her Master's Degree in Elementary Education (1963), and her Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling (1965) from Shippensburg University. She then went on to achieve the first Psychology Certification issued by Millersville University, the title Advanced Graduate Specialist in Student Personnel Administration from the University of Maryland in 1972, and her Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Maryland in 1975–the oldest married female to achieve this at that time.
Throughout her academic career and full-time employment, she had the support of a loving husband by her side. Helen was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She cherished her family and loved spending time with them.
Dr. Renner had many jobs and positions in the community throughout her life: She taught at the East Berlin, Littlestown, and South Western school districts–a counselor and psychologist at South Western before retiring in 2002 after nearly 44 years serving in education. She was a Clinical Psychologist for Philhaven, serving residents of Homewood at Plum Creek and the Brethren Home until 2014. More important than any academic or professional achievement, though, was Dr. Renner's care and compassion for every child, family, and resident she interacted with, counseled, and helped.
She was an active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Hanover where she served on the Church Board, Stephen's Ministry, as a Psychologist/Educational volunteer for Discovery Preschool, and as a greeter. Dr. Renner was a former member of the St. Bartholomew Lutheran Church in Hanover, the St. John Lutheran Church in Littlestown, and a Board Member of SpiriTrust Lutheran. She was a member of the American Psychological Association, York County Retired Teachers Association, Beta Sigma Phi, Eastern Star, Hanover Council of Churches, and Hanover Mental Health Services
Helen is survived by her son David Robert Renner, husband of Queenie Tolete-Renner of Coopersburg, her daughter Amy Louvise Cook, wife of Douglas Cook of Carlisle, and her six grandchildren: Dr. Corinne Renner-Edmond and her husband Dr. Tyler Edmond of Reisterstown, MD, Danielle Renner of Duluth, GA, Jason Renner of Richmond, VA, Jonathan Cook and his wife Erin Cook of Carlisle, Benjamin Cook of Carlisle, and Ariella Cook of Carlisle. Additionally, Helen is survived by her sister, Janet Nace, wife of Norman Nace, and her brother, Nevin Wintrode.
