Helen Irene (Wentz) Dubs, 96, formerly of Mountaintop, PA, died peacefully at Brookdale–Sandy Springs, on Saturday, January 23, 2021, in Maryville, TN.
Helen was born April 14, 1923, in Hanover, PA. She attended Lohr's United Brethren Church and was a 1941 graduate of Eichelberger Senior High School, Hanover, PA. Helen worked in G. C. Murphy's Five & Dime Store, Hanover Center Square, from 1944 to 1951. In 1951, she married Richard Dubs and moved to Montoursville, south of Williamsport. The Dubses lived in Montoursville from 1952 to 1979 and attended Bethany Lutheran Church before moving to Mountaintop, PA. There, Helen was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Mountaintop Needle Club, and the Mountaintop Welcome Club for over 30 years.
Helen grew up in rural York County during the Great Depression, helped out on her family's farm, and learned the value of hard work and the joys of helping others. Helen met Richard ("Dick") Dubs one evening while roller skating. They soon married and escaped to forested Lycoming County. There, Dick and Helen learned to camp and fish. Helen volunteered as a Girl Scout leader, Luther League advisor, Cub Scout Den Mother, Sunday school teacher, and ELCA Ladies Auxiliary Chairman. She loved to volunteer.
Helen was the daughter of the late Clarence E. and Virginia M. (Null) Wentz. She was the wife of Richard B. Dubs, to whom she was married for 62 years. Helen was predeceased by her husband in 2013. She is survived by her loving son, David A. Dubs; a daughter-in-law, Charlene (Wells) Dubs; and two grandchildren: Nathan Dubs, Owensboro, KY, and Alexis Dubs, Boston, MA.
Interment will be at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hanover, PA, Friday, January 29 th at 11:00 a.m. A socially distanced quiet time of remembrance will be observed. Later in the year, a celebration of Helen's life will be held. Memorial Contributions may be sent to the Youth Fund, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 316 S. Mountain Blvd., Mountaintop, PA, 18707.
