Obituary

Henry (Hank) John Evans, aged 92, of St. Petersburg, FL passed away peacefully on Veteran's Day, November 11, 2023 at his summer home in Gettysburg, PA surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Plains. PA on October 8, 1931 and was the son of the late Kathryn C. Jones Evans and William D. Evans, of Plains, PA.

He was preceded in death by his wife and the love of his life, the former Barbara Ann Brace, sisters Jane Ann Moran, Dorothy Elizabeth McMinn and brother William David Evans.

Hank is survived by his son William H. Evans and daughter-in-law Cathleen M. Evans of Parish, FL; daughter Diane G. Evans of Rockville, MD, two grandsons, John E. Evans, wife Alyssa Sakurai, of Santa Fe, NM; and Daniel J. Evans, wife Anna Evans of Abington, MD; and a great grandson, Damien J. Evans, of Santa Fe, NM, and many nieces and nephews.

He graduated from Plains High School where he played taps on his trumpet at burials of soldiers killed in World War II. He was first employed by the International Union of Electrical Workers (IUE) as a mimeograph operator while attending Benjamin Franklin University School of Accounting (now George Washington University) at night. He then served for thirty-one years as Treasurer and CEO of the AFL-CIO Federal Credit Union in Washington, DC.

Hank served his country honorably in the US Army with 2 years of active duty in the Korean War as a tank commander, Sargent 1st Class, in the same brigade as General Patton's son. In 2013, he, with his daughter and grandson, went back to Korea as guests of the South Korean government through a program honoring all who defended South Korea. The highlight of their trip was the reenactment of the Battle of Inchon.

He was a former member of the Exchange Club in Rockville, MD and a member of the VFW. He bought property at Lake Heritage, PA in 1968 and had the shell of a vacation home constructed by a local builder. He then completed the interior. He, together with his wife Barbara, was instrumental in starting the annual Lake Heritage Labor Day Regatta celebration and organized the event medals. He was also a member of the Lake Heritage Fishing Club and an active member of Gettysburg United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher.

In 2022, Hank became a Florida resident living with his son and daughter-in-law and returned to Lake Heritage for the summer months with his daughter. He was a talented handyman, mechanic and a gentle, devoted family man. His greatest joys besides family were singing and whistling, and he had a gift for entertaining children.
