James H. Frey, passed away at the age of 74 on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at UPMC Hanover. His departure marks the end of a life lived with dedication, love, and an unwavering spirit of service. James leaves behind his cherished wife, Norma-Jean "NJ" Frey. Their union of 42 years was filled with shared joys, adventures, and an enduring bond that stood as a testament to their profound love for each other.
Born on March 10, 1950, in Hanover, he was the son of the late Harold H. and Margaret E. (Wertz) Frey, who instilled in him the values of hard work, dedication, and compassion. These values guided him throughout his life, from his service in the Army during the Vietnam War to his distinguished career and personal endeavors.
James's academic and professional achievements were notable. He was a proud alumnus of Shippensburg University, where he earned two degrees that propelled him into a fulfilling career at the same institution. For 35 years, he served as the director of applications development, a role in which he excelled and left a lasting impact.
An avid sports enthusiast, James's love for baseball and football knew no bounds. He was a devoted fan of the Yankees and Steelers, celebrating their victories with passion and enduring their defeats with unwavering loyalty.
James was preceded in death by his loving parents and two sisters, Elizabeth Schwan and Lois Lockner. He leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and kindness that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
A service to celebrate James's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 8, 2024, at the Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover, with Rev. Steven Ostendorf officiating. Friends and family are invited to gather, share memories, and pay their respects from 10 a.m. until the time of service. James will be laid to rest at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, where he will be honored with full military honors by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
