Jane G.
Miller
d. Apr 23, 2026
Our mother, Jane G. Miller, passed away peacefully at SpiriTrust in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on April 23rd, 2026, at the ripe old age of 90 and a half.
Life began for Jane in Corry, Pennsylvania on October 22,1935, the daughter of Dorthy Waller and John Jay Griffiths. She spent most of her early years on a farm in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania that provided many fond memories, especially the wooded acreage with an abundance of maple trees perfect for climbing. She graduated from Cambridge Springs High School and later attended Edinboro State College where she met her future husband. Jane went back to school in her 40s and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Library Science from Millersville University and later earned a Masters in Library Science from Clarion University. Jane worked at Martin Library in York, PA and the Guthrie Memorial Library in Hanover. She also worked at the York Haven Library, the West York High School Library, and helped facilitate the merger of the Shrewsbury Library and the New Freedom Library into the Southern York Library.
Jane demonstrated her dedication to the community as a Girl Scout leader for many years and a long time volunteer with the Red Cross in Hanover. As a Red Cross volunteer she traveled to New York City after 9/11, Altoona, PA after a flood, Arizona for fire relief and New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. In each of these placements she played a variety of roles in providing aid to those in need.
Jane was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend and community member. She is remembered for her delicious meals and baked goods. Not only did she provide for her family but also for many friends, neighbors and strangers; anyone she came upon who needed a place to belong.
Mom will also be remembered for her love of the outdoors. She loved to camp, hike, swim, bike, kayak and travel, especially to Idaho. Family and friends have many fond memories of camping or backpacking with Jane, even during Hurricane Agnes. She started these activities with her family when they were very young and all of them have carried her legacy forward. Last summer, in her 89th year, Mom swam in Fuller Lake seven times. This swimming hole in particular was known as her "happy place!"
An avid reader, Jane could often be found with a good book. If she wasn't reading she was quilting. Grammy Jane designed many quilts and wall hangings for her friends and family, now beloved family heirlooms.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert Burton Miller and her granddaughter Galia Rose Kendlehart. She leaves behind her children; Karen Kendlehart (Neal), sons Robert (Wendy) Jeffrey (Renee') and Michael (Sharlene). She also leaves behind eleven grandchildren; Victor Kendlehart, Madelyn, Ben and Sarah Miller, Caleb (Jess), Colin (Jordan) and Carter Miller, Morgan and Charles Miller, and Madison and Evan Murray. Also two great grandchildren; Eloise Jane and Fitzroy Burton Miller. And she leaves behind her brother John Jay Griffiths, two nephews Jay and Bob and three nieces Kim, Karol and Karrie.
Jane was a member of the Unitarian Universalists Congregation of Gettysburg, however, her Celebration of Life will be held nearby at Trinity UCC, 60 East High Street, Gettysburg, on May 29, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation at 10:00 a.m.
Memorial contributions can be made to Martin Library, 159 East Market Street, York, PA 17401, or Guthrie Memorial Library, 2 Library Place, Hanover, PA 17331 or the Unitarian Universalists of Gettysburg, 136 South Stratton, Gettysburg, PA 17325
