Janet L. Peters, 99 of New Oxford, formerly of Hanover passed away peacefully at the Cross Keys Village Brethren Home Community on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
Born September 15, 1926 in Tyrone Township, PA, she was a daughter of the late Zeal R. and Ethel M. (Cline) Peters.
Ms. Peters graduated from Biglerville High School in the class of 1944, at which time she was employed as a stenographer at the Adams County Commissioner's office until 1948. From 1948 until 1956, she worked as a secretary with the United Brethren Publishing House in Huntington, IN, and then at Huntington College until 1970, serving first as Chief Accountant and completing her tenure as Assistant Treasurer. Her professional talents then carried her to Frostburg State University in Maryland where she served until 1994, retiring as Budget Director.
In addition to her dedication to her profession, Janet served in many volunteer roles serving her community. She joined the League of Women Voters in Allegheny County, MD in 1973 and served in various offices, including two 4-year terms as President. Additionally, she served on the State Board of the League of Women Voters of Maryland from 1993-1999, and again from 2001-2003, serving 6 years as Treasurer. While in Frostburg, she volunteered with Meals on Wheels, Frostburg Museum and the Frostburg Village Gift Shop. At the time of her passing, she remained an active member of First United Methodist Church (now First Church) in Hanover, PA.
Janet is survived by two siblings: Shirley P. Heltibridle of East Berlin and Miriam P. Zepp of New Oxford; six nieces / nephews: Kay A. Hinkle (Jack) of Mechanicsburg, Alan N. Zepp (Cindy) of New Oxford, Barry E. Zepp (Melanie) of Buda, TX, Carol A. Zepp (Angelos Devletoglou) of Hamilton, MA, Joyce L. Vanderscheuren (Mike) of Minneapolis, MN and Jennifer L. Wakemen (Jeff) of Turnersville, NJ.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three siblings: Rodney C. Peters, June P. Kuntz and Lynn M. Peters.
A funeral service to celebrate Janet's life will be held at 11am on Friday, February 6th at the Cross Keys Village Nicarry Chapel; 2990 Carlisle Pike in New Oxford with Pastor Jennifer Murphy officiating. Following a fellowship lunch after the service, interment will take place in Biglerville Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Nicarry Chapel from 10am until the start of the service.
Arrangements are under the care of Wetzel Funeral Home & Crematory in Hanover.
