Obituary

Jean R. Brady of Hanover, the world's greatest wife and mother, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, November 9, 2021.

Jean was the daughter of the late John Gilbert and Mary Elizabeth (Brodbeck) Rebert. She was the loving wife of her late husband Dan Brady and the loving mother to her son Rob Brady. In addition to her son, Jean is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Connie and Richard Franklin and her nieces Katie, Annie, and Rebecca Noppenberger, and numerous cousins. In addition to Dan, Jean was preceded in death by her brother John Thomas Rebert and her niece and goddaughter Kelly Franklin Noppenberger.

Jean was a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy, McSherrystown. Upon graduating, Jean pursued her career in cosmetology. After completing her apprenticeship, she became a licensed cosmetologist and worked at several Hanover beauty salons. Following in the entrepreneurial spirit of other family members, she owned and operated Jean R. Brady Beauty Salon in McSherrystown for over two decades. She then went on to own the Paperback Exchange, Hanover's first used bookstore. During her retirement, she worked part-time at the Hanover Street Elementary School.

Jean had many passions in life. Her number one passion was reading. She attributed this to receiving Nancy Drew mysteries as a child. That passion also drove her desire to open her bookstore. Her second most favorite passion was gardening along with history, traveling, British television, and cars. You could catch her watching the latest show on the newest cars and was proud to tell you she had a lead foot and how much she loved her convertible.

Besides her zest for enjoying life, she was a classy, dignified lady who loved an organized life. Jean had a system for everything! An impeccable house cleaner, she loved hanging curtains! Any visitor to her house knew the living room was off limits except for special occasions and the holiday season. Special permission was needed to enter! Even her beloved miniature schnauzer Plimpton wouldn't enter the living room without her going first! You could always find her enjoying her back porch admiring the view when the sun was shining, and the temperatures were warm.

And of course, family and friends meant the most to Jean. In her early days, family trips with her dad's boat to meet the Baltimore side of the family at Hart Island and Sandy Point were memorable, pool parties almost every Sunday during the summer followed, and long weekends to Ocean City, MD over the years were an important part of her life. One who always enjoyed good food and company, searching out the newest place to eat and stopping by the regular places over the years like the Amity House, the Hill Tavern, and CJ's Restaurant were equally important. By far her favorite, Hoffman's Restaurant on York Street Hanover, which was owned by her aunt Beulah, was the best place for ice cream and catching up with family and friends. Besides ice cream, a good gin and tonic and chocolate martini made her day. Her stories about her "favorite" cousins were classics and which cousin was the "favorite" always depended on the story. And of course, you could always find Jean going along with Dan and Rob as they followed their passions as well.
