Jean E. (Burgan) Harper, 84, of Hanover, PA, formerly of Reisterstown, MD, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 21, 2025, at her daughter's home in Hanover. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose kindness and gentle spirit touched all who knew her.
Born July 21, 1941, in Baltimore, MD, she was the daughter of the late Hubert Tucker Burgan, Sr. and Jean (Roney) Burgan. She was the devoted wife of the late G. Gordon Harper, with whom she shared 58 years of marriage until his passing in 2022.
Jean was exceptionally creative and enjoyed many artistic pursuits. She loved drawing and painting alongside her husband, and she was a talented quilter and seamstress. She also enjoyed making stained glass pieces and designing jewelry. Tending to her flowers and watching the birds outside her window brought her great joy, and she cherished quiet moments spent appreciating the beauty around her.
Jean is survived by her children, Victor S. Harper of Hagerstown, MD; Jeanna Harper Tolentino (Michael) of Hanover, PA; Gregory A. Harper (Samantha) of Delaware; and Jennifer L. Shirk (C. Edward) of Hanover, PA; seven grandchildren, Anthony G. Harper, Nicholas E. Shirk (Tiara), Reagan A. Harper, Clayton T. Shirk (Megan), Jack G. Harper, Savana H. Tolentino, and Dominick M. Tolentino; and four great-grandchildren, Lukas, Sophia, Elizabeth, and Thomas. She is also survived by her brother, Hubert Burgan, Jr. (Helen); her nephew, David Burgan (Kelly); and her nephew-in-law, Frank McGuire.
In addition to her parents and husband, Jean was preceded in death by her niece, Marie McGuire.
A service to celebrate Jean's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory, 549 Carlisle Street, Hanover, PA. A time to visit with the family and share memories will be held from 10 a.m. until the start of the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Marburg Memorial Gardens, Hanover. Pallbearers will include Anthony Harper, Michael Tolentino, C. Edward Shirk, Nicholas Shirk, Clayton Shirk, and Brady Conroy.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jean's memory to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Foundation, P.O. Box 781352, Philadelphia, PA 19178-1352, in honor of her great-granddaughter's early health challenges.
