Obituary

Joseph Scianna, age 67, of Hanover, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 17, 2025, at Hospice and Community Care in Mt. Joy, after a courageous battle with colon cancer. He was the loving companion of Brenda Lee Sloman.

Born November 30, 1957, in Reading, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Nicholas L. Scianna, Sr. and Marie Teresa (DeAngelis) Scianna.

Joe was raised in Reading and was a 1975 graduate of Holy Name High School. In his younger years, he served proudly as an altar boy. Joe enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and was especially devoted to his dog, Dixie. He was an avid fan of Philadelphia sports, faithfully cheering for the Phillies and the Eagles. Joe was very passionate about the things he loved, God, Brenda, Dixie, family, friends, and his 1991 Foxbody Mustang.

He worked in Reading at various jobs throughout his life, including a position at the Reading Eagle Newspaper, before an injury led to his early retirement. After his mother's passing in 2014, Joe moved to McSherrystown in 2015, where he met many wonderful new friends and built lasting connections in the community. After moving in with Brenda, he came to love her family as his own.

In addition to his companion, Joe is survived by his sister, Sandra M. Mauger of North Port, FL; two brothers, Anthony (Mary) Scianna of Exeter Township and Dennis (Deb) Scianna of Exeter Township; his special family friend, Ruth Zerbe; and many loving extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Nicholas Lewis Scianna, Jr.

A time to share memories and an opportunity to view will be on Friday October 24, 2025 at the Wetzel Funeral Home & Crematory, 549 Carlisle St. Hanover. A graveside service to celebrate Joe's life will be held at 12:00 p.m. following the viewing, at Rest Haven Cemetery, located at the intersection of Westminster Avenue and Boundary Avenue in Hanover. Pallbearers will be: Travis Sloman, Rick Cover, Andy Blumenthal, Kevin Schroeder, Kristen Schroeder, and Steve Simpson.

Brenda would like to express her heartfelt thanks to Choices Palliative Care, Hospice, and the nurses and staff at the Bob Fryer Inpatient Center in Mt. Joy for their compassionate care and for making the end of Joe's journey peaceful.
