Lucille H.
Layman
May 18, 1943 — Feb 23, 2026
Lucille H. (Wood) Layman, 82, of Hanover, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully on Monday, February 23, 2026, at UPMC Hanover Hospital. She was the devoted and loving wife of Nelson E. Layman, Sr., with whom she shared 63 wonderful years of marriage.
Born May 18, 1943, in Rockville, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Thomas G. and Violette N. (Shifflett) Wood.
She graduated from Gaithersburg High School with the Class of 1961. It was during her high school years that she met the love of her life, Nelson. After graduation, the two began their life together and were married in 1962, building a strong and loving foundation centered on family, and commitment.
Following high school, Lucille worked for the Atomic Energy Commission in Germantown, Maryland. In 1964, she embraced her most cherished role — becoming a mother and dedicating herself to raising her family. Once her youngest child entered elementary school, Lucille returned to the workforce in the healthcare industry until her retirement.
Lucille had a vibrant spirit and a love for life. She loved to sing, and as a child, she performed with her father's band on the radio station WINX in Rockville, Maryland. She proudly served as Director of the Gaithersburg TNT Majorette and Drum Corps for 15 years, mentoring countless young performers and forming lasting friendships along the way.
Above all else, Lucille's greatest joy was her family. They meant the world to her. She treasured every moment spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren — whether it was baking cookies in the kitchen, celebrating holidays, or simply enjoying time together. Her family was the light of her life and the source of her brightest smiles.
In addition to her beloved husband, Lucille is survived by her children: Tammy Layman of Hanover, Pennsylvania; Nelson E. Layman, Jr. and his wife Wendy of Williamsport, Maryland; and Tanya Staehling and her husband James of Hanover, Pennsylvania. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Jordan Ayton, Kaleigh Ayton, Joshua Staehling, Andrew Staehling, Tyler Layman, Sophie Butts, Jacob Staehling, and Shane Layman; her great-grandchildren: Savannah, Cameron, Corinne, and Callie; her sister-in-law, Cheryl Custer and her husband Roland of Mercersburg, Pennsylvania; and many extended family members and dear friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Shirley Pope.
Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Believe in Tomorrow Children's House at Johns Hopkins which provides free accommodations to families with children receiving critical care treatment. https://www.believeintomorrow.org/our-programs/childrens-house/
