Obituary

Mabel Bruck was received into the loving arms of our heavenly Father on October 12, 2022, after struggling with progressing dementia in the last year of her life.

She was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on April 9, 1937, and was the daughter of the late George M. Backert, Jr., and the late Amelia (Litzau) Backert. She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Harlyn "Wayne" Bruck; her daughter, Sharon Benford (only child); her two grandaughters and their spouses, Danielle and David Christopher, and Erika and Mike Howington; her two step-grandsons Brian Benford (and wife Christina) and Bradley Benford; and eleven great grandchildren. And also her family in Germany, her niece Joan Backert (and Jens), and Joan's daughter Sarah (and Patrick), and Sarah's daughter and son; and her nephew George "Thomas" Backert (and Yvonne), and Thomas's two sons Timothy and Cedric. Mabel is predeceased by her brother, George M. Backert, III., and his wife, Erika Backert, both of Germany; and by her daughter's late husband, Donald Benford.

Mabel enjoyed gardening. She loved planting flowers and shrubs to adorn her and her husband's home. They planted vegetable gardens too. She loved nature and enjoyed rides in the country looking for wildlife. She enjoyed occasional camping trips with her husband and daughter at Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia.

She and Wayne lived in Hanover, Pennsylvania, for almost 28 years. She was a homemaker, and very devoted to him, even after he contracted Alzheimer's some years before her death. She was a member and occasional attender of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Snydersburg, Maryland. Previously they owned homes in Pleasant Hill, PA; Manchester, MD; and Baltimore, MD.

Mabel was a very devoted and generous mother. As a daughter, she was very faithful to her mom, who was widowed for 28 years after her father's death. She appreciated the devoted care her and Wayne received from their daughter, Sharon, and Dennis Helmick over the last nine and one half months.

Mabel passed away peacefully at Chambersburg Hospital in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at Littlestown Chapel, 1144 Bollinger Road, Littlestown, PA, on November 12, 2022, at 1:00 PM.
