Marvin Vaux
Hewitt
May 3, 1924 — Feb 22, 2025
Marvin Vaux Hewitt, Sr. of Hanover, PA, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at the age of 100. He is now in Heaven's 19th hole, reunited with his beloved wife of 62 years, Mercedes V. Hewitt (née Spies).
Born on May 3, 1924, in Hedrick, Iowa, Marvin was the son of the late Joseph M. Hewitt and Lena J. Hewitt (née Bottorff). A proud World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army in Italy before embarking on a career with the Social Security Administration and later with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maryland.
Marvin and Mercedes found joy in helping raise their grandchildren in Florida and Maryland, attending countless sporting events near and far. He adored being around children, often remarking how entertaining they were.
An avid golfer, Marvin was affectionately known as "Down the Middle Marvin" for his skill and precision on the course. His love for the game was matched by his talent as a handyman—always a perfectionist, he took pride in helping with home projects for his children.
He is survived by his five children: Marvin V. Hewitt, Jr., Mark V. Hewitt (Louisa), Martin V. Hewitt, Michele V. Wagner (Elwin), and Mercedes V. Brooks (Michael); 11 cherished grandchildren; Joel, Bradley, Morgan, Sahily, Seve, Megan, Drew, Katelyn, Colby, Kristin and Michael. Great grandchildren; Heather, Jacob, Katelyn, Daniel, Oaklyn, Wyatt, Soleil, Olivia, Sydney, Winter, Charlotte, Vaux, and Richard. One dear great-great grandchild Evelyn.
Marvin shared countless rounds of golf and camaraderie with his best friends Tom Hannibal and Elsie, along with many dear golfing companions, including Vicky, Lola, Terry, Tony, Tracy, Darin, Minnie, Keith, Bill, Dale, George, Jay, Jack, Matt, Larry, Scotty, Coach Darr, Randy and Natalie. Always full of energy, he never turned down an extra round and treasured his time at Quail Valley Golf Club, where he was a devoted member and played his final round last year.
Known for his humor, Marvin had a habit of calling people "Fred" when he couldn't recall their names—an endearing quirk that became a signature of his warm personality.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mercedes and his brothers Merrill, Francis, and Joseph.
Honoring Marvin's wishes, his family will gather privately to celebrate his remarkable life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VNA of Hanover & Spring Grove, 440 Madison St, Hanover, PA 17331, whose compassionate care was invaluable to Marvin and his family.
