Nan L. Sterner, daughter of Christ, was loved into Heaven by her family on February 3, 2021 at her Hanover home at the age of 73 after a journey with GBM.  Being with family and friends, picnicking, shopping, cooking, playing cards/dominoes, and spending time at the beach, brought Nan much joy.  She also could be found cheering on PSU football,  Mount Saint Mary's basketball, and attending local high school sporting events.

A 1965 graduate of Hanover High School, Nan loved the town of Hanover and joyously served the community as president of the Hanover Alumni Association, Penn Township Lioness Club, and served as vice president of the 1965 Alumni Class. Additionally, she served on the board for the Hanover Habitat for Humanity building project and was a member of the Hanover Elks Post #763.

Nan also reached her community through St. Matthew Lutheran Church, where she served on the church council and was active in the social ministry committee, Ruth's Harvest, alter guild, S.A.W., and hospitality desk.  She was an usher captain, greeter, and vacation Bible school teacher.

Nan worked in various banking positions including bank teller for American Bank and Trust in Reading, as well as Baltimore Bank and Trust in Owings Mills.  Additionally, she worked as an accounts receivable clerk for Dixie Cup Corp. in Owings Mills, and worked in the installment loan department at the Bank of Hanover. She was also secretary to the bank president of Hampstead Bank and Trust.  The majority of Nan's working years were spent as business manager for both Sterner Coal and Sterner Fuel Oil Companies. Nan enjoyed her later years serving clients at Shearers and Country Manor Florists, as well as Wetzel's Funeral Home where she was a secretary.

Nan was the daughter of the late Edwin and Pauline Ensminger.  She was preceded in death by her sisters Karen Winebrenner and Vivian Gruver and her husband Richard.  She also was preceded in death by her father and mother in law, Floyd and Nadine Sterner, as well as their son, Thomas Sterner.  She leaves behind her husband of 52 years, Phillip Sterner of Hanover as well as her daughter Jennifer Oswald and her husband Brian of Dover. Remaining also is a sister Noreen Markle and her husband Robert of McSherrystown, a brother Ned Ensminger and his wife Judy of Thomasville, and brother in law Robert Winebrenner of Hanover, along with seven nephews, one niece, nine great nieces and nephews and four great grand nieces and nephews.
