Obituary

Richard A. Laughman, a beloved pillar of the Hanover community, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2024, at the age of 89, surrounded by his loving family at Hanover Hall. He was the devoted husband of the late Phyllis R. (Shaffer) Laughman, with whom he shared 54 years of cherished marriage until her passing in 2009.

Born on November 3, 1934, in Hanover, Richard was the son of the late Ervin M. and Margaret E. (Plank) Laughman. He spent his formative years in Hanover, where he excelled in football at Hanover High School before graduating.

Richard's journey through life was marked by hard work, dedication, and a deep commitment to his family and community. He held various jobs, including serving as a milkman, before finding his long-term career at Hanover Wire Cloth, where he rose to the position of supervisor before retiring.

A devout Christian, Richard was actively involved in his church throughout his life. He served as a youth leader, organized and led Bible studies, and shared his faith as a Lay Preacher. His faith was the bedrock upon which he built his life, guiding him in all endeavors.

Richard was a man deeply connected to nature, having learned invaluable skills from his father, including foraging and butchering. He found solace and joy in the great outdoors, whether camping, fishing, hunting, or spending time at his beloved cabin.

Above all, Richard was a devoted family man. He was a loving father, husband, brother, and grandfather, always there to support and care for his loved ones whenever they needed him.

Richard leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and kindness. He is survived by his children: Rose Haymaker of Spring Grove, Joyce Fowler and her husband Jim of Spring Grove, Phillip Laughman and his wife Lori of Hanover, Guy Laughman and his wife Michelle of Fairfield, Glenda Neiderer and her husband Jeff of Abbottstown, and Marie Arambulo of Hanover. He is also survived by his sister, Lois Gladfelter of Hanover, his brother, Dave Laughman of Taneytown, MD, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family members, and friends.

In addition to his parents and wife, Richard was preceded in death by his son, Allen Laughman, and his siblings: Monroe Laughman, John Laughman, Treva Noel, Alton Laughman, and Dennis Laughman.
