Obituary

Richard Charles Schwartz, 83, of Hanover, PA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center. He was the beloved husband of the late Darlene Sylvia (Glanville) Schwartz. Together, they shared many cherished years of marriage.

Born on Thursday, February 6, 1941, in Baltimore, MD, Richard was the son of the late John G. Schwartz, Sr., and Edna A. (Stiegler) Schwartz.

Richard's faith was an essential part of his life. He was a devoted member of several churches over the years, including Hanover First Church of God, North West Baptist Church in Reisterstown, MD, and Church of the Open Door in Westminster, MD. Known for his love of music, he fondly referred to the tunes of his youth as the "Oldie Goldies." His social nature and generous spirit were evident in his active involvement in church life, where he served as an usher, deacon, and volunteer, always eager to connect with others and lend a helping hand.

After serving his country as a Military Police Officer in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Garrison before the Vietnam War, Richard embarked on a long and varied career in sales and service. He worked for Kitchen Distributors of Timonium for 27 years and later held positions at Weddell Kitchen, Chrysler Wheeler, Lowe's, and Gardner's Furniture for nine years. Additionally, he served as a security officer at London Fog and found joy in greeting customers at Walmart, where he worked for 17 years before retiring fully in 2017. Richard was known for his quick wit, sense of humor, and ability to make new friends wherever he went.

Richard is survived by his son, Matthew Schwartz, and daughter-in-law Eileen of York, PA; three grandchildren, Jezreel, Zadok, and Lennox Schwartz; his brother, J. Grant Schwartz, and sister-in-law Pam; and sister-in-law Marge Schwartz wife of his late brother Allan Schwartz, and many loving extended family members and dear friends.

A service to celebrate Richard's life will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover, PA, with Rev. Luke Ball officiating.
