Mar 19, 1927 — Sep 3, 2024
Dr. Robert James Scott, 97, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2024. Born on March 19, 1927, in Cleveland, Ohio, he was son to the late Freda Scott (née Mahler) and Carl D. Scott.
He attended the University of Miami in Ohio and later received an MSEE and PhD in Communications Science from the University of Michigan. He served in the United States Air Force for 20 years as a command pilot, retiring as Colonel. He flew for the Air Force during the Korean War from 1950-1952. During his years at the NSA, he served as Chief of a NATO subcommittee, flying frequently to Europe in this capacity. He was later appointed Director of Research at the NSA, the position from which he retired.
Always looking for new challenges, before his retirement he completed a single-handed trans-Atlantic boat race; the 1984 Ostar, sailing on the Passport-40 sloop, Lands-End.
He was pre-deceased by his beloved wife of 50 years, Margaret E. (née Hinz) and is survived by two sons, Jeffrey A. Scott of Gaithersburg, MD, and Dr. James A. Scott of Lexington, MA.
