Ruth Hughes, 97, of Hanover, entered into God's eternal care on Thursday, January 5, 2023 at Homewood at Plum Creek.  She was the loving wife of the late Howard Hughes who passed away on February 10, 2001.

Born March 2, 1925 in Bakersville, NC, she was the daughter of the late Lace and Sally (Garland) Byrd.

Ruth is fondly remembered for her dedication to her family.  After retiring from Bittinger Frozen Foods in 1987, she spent most of her time babysitting grandkids, gardening, walking in Codorus Park and cooking.

She is survived by her children, Harl Hughes and wife Karen, Glenville, Clinton Hughes and wife Sandy, York Springs, Malone Hughes and wife Lana, Hanover, Joann Miller and husband Ernie, Hanover, Roger Hughes and wife Wanda, Hanover, Ronnie Hughes and wife Jenny, Spring Grove, Dale Hughes and wife Cindy, Hanover and Betty Krebs and husband Harold, Hanover; 14 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Nathan Byrd; sister, Daisy Byrd; step-sister, Mollie Gardner and step-brother, Farrell Bennett.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, January 12, 2023 at Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover, with Pastor Scott A. Sager officiating. A time to share memories and an opportunity to view will be on Thursday from 10 AM until the start of the service at the funeral home.  She will be laid to rest in Jefferson Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery, Spring Grove.  Serving as pallbearers will be, Chris Kessler, Jason Hughes, Robbie Hughes, Josh Krebs, Jake Krebs and Nathan Hughes.
