Shirley Jean Smith, 76, of Hanover, passed away Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at UPMC Pinnacle, Hanover.  She was the loving wife of Robert M. Smith, Hanover.  Together they shared 55 years of marriage.

Born March 28, 1945 in Belsano, PA, she was the daughter of the late Allen and Marie (Rummel) Bishop.

Shirley was employed in the mailroom at the Hanover Evening Sun for 20 years.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Ronald Smith, New Oxford, Roland Smith, Gettysburg, Richard Smith, Hanover and Barbara Hoover, New Oxford; sisters and brothers, Eva May Smith, Vintondale, Darlene Anderson, Vintondale, Donald Bishop and wife Karen, Vintondale, Gary Bishop and wife Cindy, North Cambria, Connie Frantz and husband David, Ebensburg, Russell Bishop and wife Dee, Indiana, PA and Beverly Chekan and husband Andy, Vintondale; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Rodney Smith and Robert M. Smith, Jr.; sister, Matilda Finley; brothers, Allen Bishop, Jr. and Robert Bishop; brother-in-law, Bernard Smith and son-in-law, Todd Hoover.

A funeral service will be held Monday, December 20, 2021 at 12 noon at the Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover with Rev. David L. DeLong officiating.  A time to share memories and an opportunity to view will be on Monday from 10 AM until the start of the service at the funeral home.
