Verna (Powers) Smith, 84, resident of Homewood at Plum Creek in Hanover went to Heaven to be with her family on Saturday, September 19, 2026. She was the beloved wife of the late Roy W. Smith, whom she married on September 21, 1963 and shared 62 years of marriage until his passing on February 25, 2026.

Born October 3, 1941 in Charleston, WV, she was a daughter of the late Albert S., Jr. and Flora M. (Madden) Powers.

Mrs. Smith placed the utmost of importance on serving the Lord and serving her family as an exceptional mother. Her sons reflect with gratitude that she was always involved in all aspects of their lives both as children and adults. She was a tireless homemaker, Cub Scout Den Leader and steady good example as they grew and started their own families. She cherished the blessing of continuing to share that love and example as a mother-in-law and grandmother. Also tirelessly serving her church community, she was a dedicated volunteer at Mt. Lebanon Christian Church and loved serving in the nursery. Her love of children also led her to work in a daycare center after her own children were grown. Always demonstrating love of neighbor, she also volunteered with Meals on Wheels in both Pittsburgh and Hanover. In addition to her service to family and community, she also enjoyed growing and drying flowers and herbs for wreath making as well as being an avid gardener of both flowering plants and vegetables. Her love of nature also extended to the many birds she loved to feed and observe. Most of all, she cherished spending time with her children and family.

Verna is survived by four sons: Roy W. “Wally” Smith and wife Muge of Milwaukee, WI, Timothy M. Smith and wife Mimi of Arvada, CO, Andrew K. Smith and wife Kristen of Bel Air, MD and Bruce D. Smith and wife Kristen of San Jose, CA; four grandchildren: Brendan, Corinne, Greta and Nate; her brother, Byron Powers and wife Sally of Vanceburg, KY, as well as many loving nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

A funeral service to celebrate Verna’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 3rd, 2026, at Homewood at Plum Creek Chapel (Town Center), 425 Westminster Avenue, Hanover, PA, with Rev. Jeff Shull officiating. A time to share memories with the family and an opportunity to view will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service in the chapel.
