Obituary

Wanda Lee (Townsend) Casto, 93, of Hanover, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, September 6, 2026. She was the devoted wife of the late Charles Browning Casto, with whom she shared 65 years of loving marriage. Born May 19, 1933, in a small town in Braxton County, West Virginia, Wanda was the daughter of the late Darius Ray and Eva Leatha (Harold) Townsend. Her parents moved often, following various work opportunities, until settling in Philippi, WV, where she graduated from Philippi High School. Here, she met her husband-to-be, Charles, at a church function and they married on June 19, 1954, in Volga, West Virginia.

After Charles' college graduation, they spent time in the Midwest, where Charles served in the Army. Charles and Wanda welcomed two sons, Charles Jr. and David. Then, they uprooted and settled in Maryland, where a daughter, Michelle, joined the family.

Wanda was a dedicated homemaker. In addition to nurturing her children, she cared after a wide variety of pets. She also served the community as a school crossing guard at the local elementary school for over 20 years. Wanda loved to care and serve others outside of her family, volunteering as a Cub Scout den mother, being an active member of the Mill Creek Parish United Methodist Church, and participating in numerous charitable organizations.

She enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests, including birds, camping, gardening, world traveling, reading, and crafting.

Wanda is survived by her three children, Charles Browning Casto Jr. and his wife, Christina, of Buffalo, New York, David Wayne Casto of Hanover, and Michelle Ann Augustine of Merritt Island, Florida; seven grandchildren, Magellan Kelly Casto and her husband, Rob Carmichael, James Everett Casto, Joshua David Casto, Noah Lee Casto and his wife, Katie, Hannah Irene Kirby and her husband, Alexander, Robertson Charles Augustine, and Kathleen Michelle Augustine; five great-grandchildren, Morgan Kay Carmichael, Quinn Marion Carmichael, Easton River Casto, Landon David Kirby, and Brooklynn Irene Kirby; and her sister, Margie Ann Poole of Rocky Mount, South Carolina. She was blessed with a large and loving family, as well as many dear friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, Wanda was preceded in death by her siblings, Dallas Ray Townsend, James Donald Townsend, Robert Dale Townsend, Kenneth Burl Townsend, and Genevieve Marie Townsend Phillips.

A service to celebrate Wanda’s life will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2026, at Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory, 549 Carlisle Street, Hanover, PA with the Rev. Lynn D. Cairns officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Hanover, PA.
