Obituary

Wayne F. "Butch" Bowers, 74 of Dover passed away at home on Monday, February 23, 2026.  He was the beloved husband of 31 years to Betty A. (Wilson) Bowers, whom he married on July 4th, 1994.

Born July 4th, 1951 in Hanover, he was a son of the late Nyles C. and Geraldine F. (Weaver) Bowers.

Mr. Bowers proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.  He was a devoted family man who treasured time spent with his loved ones, whether gathered at home or around a campfire during family camping trips.  He shared a deep love of the outdoors with his wife, and together they created many cherished memories.  Wayne also had a strong appreciation for working with his hands and found great satisfaction in woodworking, crafting pieces that reflected both his skill and care.  In his youth, he loved playing marbles, and took especially great pride in his ability to ride a wheelie on his bicycle the entire length of the street. His family will especially cherish the memory of his robust sense of humor, magnetic personality and resilient spirit.    Wayne could always be counted on to cheer someone up when they were down.  He also had a special knack for assigning nicknames, usually of a humorous nature, to his beloved family and friends.  His two nieces, Denise and Kimberly, and his nephew, Kevin were especially honored to spend time with and care for their cherished uncle, especially in his last days.

In addition to his wife, Wayne is survived by four children: Jessica Allgood and husband David of Somerset, Dwayne Bowers of Biglerville, Douglas Bowers and wife Sandy of Biglerville and Kelly Cressler of Arendtsville; his sister, Gloria Link; his nieces: Denise Wible and husband John and Kimberly Beachtel and husband Doug; his nephew, Kevin Schoolcraft, twelve grandchildren, four great-grandchildren (and two on the way) , as well as many other loving extended family and friends.  He is also survived by his beloved Australian Shepherd, Caleb.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Kevin W. Sheely, as well as his two faithful dogs, Fawn and Teddy Bear.

A funeral service to celebrate Wayne's life will be held at 1pm on Wednesday, March 4th at Wetzel Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc.; 549 Carlisle St. in Hanover with Rev. Samuel Miller officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery in Hanover.  A time to share memories and an opportunity to view will be Wednesday afternoon at the funeral home from 12 noon until the start of the service.
