William Philip
Bankert
May 6, 1937 — Nov 23, 2024
William "BeBe"/"Bill" Philip Bankert, 87, of Hanover, PA, was welcomed into his heavenly home on Saturday, November 23, 2024, after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease for over a decade. Born on May 6, 1937, in Hanover, Bill was the beloved son of the late Harold and Adella (Lentz) Bankert.
Bill is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Sandra; his cherished daughters, Brenda Bankert and Bonnie Shirley (husband Tom); and his adored granddaughters, Shaina Zevallos and Alyssa Zevallos. He also leaves behind his dear sister, Barb Brodbeck, along with many nieces, nephews, and close friends who enriched his life. He was predeceased by five siblings: Harold Bankert, Jr., Imogene Bankert, John Bankert, Cecil Bankert, and Ann Phillips.
A lifelong learner and educator, Bill earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Millersville University and dedicated his career to shaping young minds. He began teaching woodworking and industrial arts at South Western Junior-Senior High School when it first opened in 1959. For 40 years, Mr. Bankert inspired countless students with his passion for teaching and mentoring. He also served as a wrestling and 9th-grade football coach and founded the school's Bible Club, fostering a space for spiritual growth among students. Even after retiring, Bill's dedication to education continued through 14 years of volunteer work at Park Hills Elementary School.
Faith was the cornerstone of Bill's life. As a longtime member of Hanover First Church of God, he served his congregation with devotion, teaching Sunday School and encouraging others in their spiritual journeys. His unwavering commitment to God and his family was evident in all that he did. Bill's life revolved around his loved ones, and he always prioritized creating meaningful moments with his daughters and granddaughters.
Beyond his family and faith, Bill had a passion for sports, especially cheering on the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles. Whether watching games on TV or talking about the latest plays, he found joy in rooting for his favorite teams.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Hanover First Church of God, 600 Fairview Ave., Hanover, officiated by Rev. Dan Thomas. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Marburg Memorial Gardens, Hanover. Friends and family are invited to gather afterward for a luncheon and time of fellowship at the church.
In lieu of flowers, Bill expressed his wish for contributions to be made in his memory to Tender Care Pregnancy Consultation, 300 John Street, Hanover, PA 17331, an organization close to his heart.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate nurses and caregivers of VNA Hospice for their loving care and support.
