William W. "Bill" Wagner, 86 of Hanover passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 27th, 2024. He was the beloved husband of 64 years to Helen J. (Byer) Wagner.
Born January 27, 1938 in York, he was a son of the late George and Charlotte (Sultner) Wagner.
Bill was a 1955 graduate of William Penn Senior High School where he ran track, earning him a full scholarship to the University of Maryland where he obtained his Bachelor's Degree. He then continued his education at Western Maryland College where he earned his Master's Degree. Bill served a long career as a Physical Education Teacher and coach, building and maintaining lifelong relationships with his students. Never one to slow down, he won a Gold Medal for swimming in the Senior Olympics and even became a Mason in 2015 at the age of 77, entering the Masonic Order at Kedron Lodge 387 in Hendersonville, NC. In his free time, Bill enjoyed trout fishing and painting. He developed the special skill of painting on fossils, including one of his masterpieces which is displayed at the Johnny Cash Museum.
In addition to his beloved Helen, Mr. Wagner is survived by two children, three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, three 2nd cousins and his brother, Jack A. Wagner and wife Juanita of Asheville, NC.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son and two grandchildren.
A memorial service to celebrate Bill's life will be held on Wednesday, March 6th at 11am at Wetzel Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc.; 549 Carlisle St. in Hanover with Rev. Kevin Orewiler officiating. A time to gather and share memories with the family will also be on Wednesday at the funeral home from 10am until the start of the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association: 610 Community Way; Lancaster, PA 17603 or to the American Diabetes Association; 150 Monument Rd.; Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004.
